Fast Space

Artificial selection of pedestrian behaviour in public space

Project team: Jan Everaert, De Block Matthijs

Location: City Park, Kiel, Belgium

Year: 2020 - 2021

Fast space is an experimental installation developed using a cctv camera and artificial intelligent algoritms to detect the way pedestrians behave in public space. Commissioned by the City of Antwerp in honor of 100 year Olympisch in Antwerp, this installation analyses the speed of a space on a certain day, detects unique behaviours and presents those on a digital screen to city dwellers.

The project explores how we experience space and how behaviour can be quantified and segmented by artificial frameworks. Only unique behaviours are being shown, and show passersby a glimps of what has happened before them in that space, but only the achievements that are unique enough to tell.
